Hey... I've been writing about my mishaps for years now and people read
them. Not much more to it than that. Of course, I meet a few people when
I'm traveling in their neighborhood or vice versa. Some people actually
keep my posts - better than I do. I've seen one or two collections and they
are quite methodical (the people who keep the notes that is). Some people
use twitter, facebook, myspace, or linkedin. Others have a few more
mechanisms. I toss emails and phone calls with a lot of people and some of
them call me when they have issues to mull over. It's time consuming. Over
guy even moved into my town and got a job here and over the years we've
worked on projects and even worked together at jobs.
So it sounds a bit strange but it is true nonetheless.
I've been helping people with their resumes and career advice now for over a
decade. I think if I started competing with Eman Conde - he wouldn't like
me very much. I've even met Eman once.
Hey I'm a globally busy guy who works full-time and lately been burning the
midnight oil and at the same time one of my hobbies is keeping up with my
forum/list activities around the globe.
It's more work than anything else, but I'm never bored.
And hey... since that Patriot Act thing... I'm not all over the place doing
things that might get me into trouble... I used to spend my wee hours of
the night hunting down 0-Day Exploits and cracking down on drug rings and
stuff in my spare time. This translates to hopping whereever the packets
took me along the way and sometimes I'd find myself cleaning up exploited
sites and leaving a note for admins on how to close the hole.
I once was tracking one "hacker" and found myself in two banks in different
states and then had to find the glue between them and my company I was
working for. Turned out to be the ex-admin I'd replaced and I found him
while I was tracking some root-kit. I think the company that the banks
hired let him go for that one. My company like the guy as I recall.
I guess I could write about that stuff and how to decrypt hard drives and
recover data all day but I lose people on explaining how a master boot
record works and why I actually freeze hard drives as a "technique".
I guess I'll stick with writing firewall rules, creating vpns, and tuning
ips/ids boxes or just watching my logs, responding to various alerts,
managing permissions, and general routing and switching duties.
