As Scott said - they have to have same database.
You can however not have route in the routing table using distribute-list.
I.E. it will be in the database on R2, but it won't appear in the routing
table there. With Distribute-list and area range you will not have route on
R2 or anywhere else in the network.
Note: Dristribute list has local significance in OSPF and alters only local
operations (RIB composition - Routing - Redistribution)
