Hi John,

Any form of encapsulation will reduce the maximum size of your payload
packets, since you only have a limited interface MTU.

Using GRE gives you more flexibility in that it allows you to tunnel
protocols other than just IP, and/or tunnel across non IP networks. It
also has other nice features such as keys and keepalives (though I think
keepalives may be cisco proprietary).

IP-in-IP is more restricted in what it can do, but being more streamlined it
can use smaller headers and thus supports a larger MTU for your payload
packets.
