As far as cities go, Dubai absolutely rocks. When I first visited there
back in the early nineties, it was little more than a giant duty-free
shopping mall. It was basically a shopping destination for Europeans. I
visited there a few years ago and it boggled my mind. Some of the finest
accommodations on the planet can now be found there:
You need a reservation just to have a drink on the observation deck. Let's
just say the reservation isn't free. Also, what will likely be the world's
tallest building for some time to come is going up now:
Check out some of those construction photos!
And did you know that you can go snow skiing in the desert?!

If you're so inclined, that is.
But what's really impressive about Dubai is what at absolute powerhouse of
commerce they have become. The duty-free shopping mall concept has been
extended to big business and you would be amazed at the sheer volume of
major corporations with a significant (even if quiet) presence there.
If I was the big city dwelling type, Dubai would be at the very top of my
list of potential places to live and work, absolutely no doubt about it.

Dubai has been beautiful for years. I don't know what channels folks have
been watching if they think differently.
