Mark,
Actually a router checks the unicast routing path back to the source from
which it received the Multicast packet, called RPF, if It finds an outgoing
interface other than that received the Multicast traffic, then it is
considered to be an RPF failure in front of the router.
Thats why some times you forcefully add an mroute to the source from the
same outgoing interface (defined for unicast route path) , hence eliminates
the RPF failure.
"ip igmp join group" is the command used for testing only for any mode.
through this command you enable a router as a "listener" of multicast
traffic
