1) when you set a router on a stick you actually setting a trunk between the
layer 2 to the router
the trunk will allow the all the vlan (layer 2 communications)
2) because it is also a router the routing engine will allow all the layer 3
communication.
usually when a pc boot in the network it will be acting differently based on
how it is configured, (DHCP, static..)
lets say he is statically configured with ip address sub-mask and def-gw the
pc will arp who has the def-gw ip address and most likly if all configured
correctly he will also get a reply from the router saying here is my mac,
that is it for the simple boot. there will be no communication between the
PC's unless asked for.
here is a simple ping scenario to show what will happen when PC1 will try to
reach PC2:
so when PC1 want to ping PC2 an arp request will be sent on PC1 vlan
reaching the router as the router have a route to PC2 he will say to PC1
send it to me, PC1 will send the icmp request to the router the router will
fwd the request to PC2 as again PC2 is in one of his vlans and the replay
from PC2 to PC1 again will come back trough the router.
very simple!!!
