No doubt that's true Brad. Probably a lot of TAC calls are from
organizations too cheap (or poor) to hire a proper IT staff or the necessary
consultants, so the Ethernet cable in the console port thing (LOL, the CD
case as a coffee cup holder?!) is no doubt dead-on.
But given what I suffered at their hands over the years, none of the above
is going to stop me from stealing a laugh at their expense from time to
time! ;~)
For our Cisco TAC list members (there are some), this was a cheap shot at
the call center types who filter out the nonsense that you don't have time
for. No offense to true TAC engineers intended whatsoever!
Happy Friday all,
Scott

About 15 years ago, I had the pleasure of working a few days in tech
support for US Robotics. Let me tell ya, the amount of calls we got
where people didn't have the modem plugged into the power, or phone
line, were ridiculous. The stories about people thinking the CD-ROM is a
cup holder - TRUE!!! If you get the opportunity to work in a
manufactures tech support, it will put you on the other side of the
fence and you'll get a better appreciation for the "dumb" questions they
are asking. I'd say more than 25% of the calls were resolved by plugging
the modems into power. I'm sure TAC gets a lot of level 1 calls with
people plugging Ethernet cables into console ports, etc. Just be patient
with the level 1 engineer as he's only doing his job and has already
solved over 25% of his calls with the "On/Off" switch verification!!! :)

Tier 1: "Is the green power light illuminated?"
You: "I did mention that it works fine up to about 20 Mbps and then
starts
to drop traffic, right?"
Tier 1: "Can you go around back and verify that the power cord is
plugged
in?"
You: "I surrender. Will you escalate after I've done that?"
Tier 1: "Right after we verify the O-N/O-F-F switch."

I have opened just one TAC case since passing the lab back in Feb, so
YMMV... There seems to be some inconsistency between how my case was
handled and what the rumor mill suggests should happen. Yes, you get
escalated past the "is the router plugged in and is the power switch in
the
"ON" position?" crowd (MERCIFULLY!). No, I don't think your case
necessarily gets handled by a CCIE nor do I think it automatically gets
forwarded to a "core technology" team, as I had been led to believe.
Honestly, this was a factor in my decision to pursue the CCIE, so I'm a
little bummed.
But I digress.
The reason for my post is to address the question about being able to
open a
TAC case without a SmartNet account. "No" seems to be the answer. I
have
SmartNet on some of my own hardware and there was a time I could open a
TAC
case against, say, a 6509 using any old device that showed up under my
personal CCO ID (and I can assure you that none of them are 6509s!). In
spite of my CCIE and my own SmartNet, I had to jump through some hoops
to
get the device in question associated with my ID before I could proceed
with
the case. It would seem Cisco has gotten fairly aggressive about this.
Having said that, if SmartNet is funded against whatever you're dealing
with, the process to set up the affiliation is not "mission impossible."
You need to know the street address and the POC that Cisco has listed
for
the device in question and theoretically they will place a call to
verify
that the POC does not object. In my case, we were dealing with
something
fairly time critical and some type of escalation took place to get the
association done ASAP. It's possible they contacted a POC while I was
on
hold, but I'm fairly certain somebody did some type of override and just
got
it done. Long story short is that I don't think holding a CCIE does
anything for you in terms of eligibility to open a TAC case...

Is there any discount on the Merchandise or other Cisco Market Place
products as it is mention on the below link?
http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/ccie/certified_ccies/index.html
The above link also mentioned the "Benefits of Cisco"
Another thing I want to confirm can a CCIE open a TAC case without
having
Smartnet associated with his ID? (My answer is NO but can any one
confirm
this : ) )
Thanks
