Hi Joe,

The journalist justifies their opinion using the exam pass statistics
they quote in the article; which are apparently significantly lower for
the CCIE. There is no perfect way of comparing the difficulty of two
very different exam paths, which different candidates posessing
different knowledge, skills and capabilities take, but passing
statistics are an empirical and common way of doing so.

Whether you have to attend school or not, how well the profession pays,
or whether there is some form of public scrutiny involved are factors
which do not necessarily make an exam any more difficult. These may
vary according to location as well as other factors, such as the effect
of the economic climate on pay which you have mentioned already.
