Honestly, the Windows OS just isn't written to take advantage of those kinds
of resources. I wouldn't worry about it took much. 3GB is more than
enough. I have 2GB on XP and it works fine. Computer speed is as much
linked to how fast you can move data between your memory and processor as it
is how much memory you have. I know it's a little late now, but you might
consider getting a motherboard with a fast bus speed and bigger cache and/or
better processor - Intel quad core was worked wonders for me.
