With a quick pointer I found a little lab in Narbik's Bootcamp workbook on
cost communities (Disclaimer: no one is paying me to say that, and IE's books,
which I'm also using, may have them in there too and I forgot and didn't find
it this morning). Turns out they're pretty easy, but sneaky in that they
don't show up in a "show ip bgp" output. Also, they aren't accounted for in
the attribute list I quoted a couple of hours ago from Odom's CCIE prep guide
- that lists doesn't account for tie-breakers or cost communities. Still a
solid list though, we just have to remember how cost communities work and how
ties are broken.

The config guide for cost communities is pretty readable. I guess it has
moved into the "tricks I'm ready for and hope I get now" category. Well,
maybe not yet, but it's on the way there.
