Keeping in mind that OSPF Virtual Links are interfaces in Area 0, you
can do your authentication either under the OSPF process or on the
inidividual interfaces. It comes down to the restrictions you have on
the question(s).

It comes down to whether you are doing authentication on Area 0. You
can have no authentication on Area0 and have authentication on the
transit Area and still have your Virtual Links not authenticated, even
though they pass over the transit area. It just comes down to the
scenario you have I would say.
