Hi Joseph,

The point has been made indirectly that the majority of people on the
list understand english better than other languages, which seems to be fair.

That said, I'm not sure thoughts like the ones expressed below will help
bring people together in a spirit of co-operation. Perhaps you will
appreciate that your own email could be seen as counter productive in
that respect.

I wouldn't be confident translating Victors email, but could understand
enough to see that he was expressing his happiness in passing and
gratitude for the help he received; it didn't strike me as likely to be
destructive or divisive in the least. Victor has made many posts in the
past in english, I don't think his last email is the start of a campaign.

Diplomats across the world often speak in their native tongues, and many
translators gain work as a result. Likewise it is not unusual for
people to converse in other languages in the worlds of domestic or
international commerce either. Perhaps it is different where you live.

English is widely used because it is convenient to do so. It helps in
getting a point across to a wide (english speaking) audience. I would
also hope english continues to predominate on groupstudy, because I
don't understand anything else very well. I appreciate though that
Groupstudy is used by people across the world, and english is not the
only, nor even the most common language spoken in the world.

If language rules had been imposed for immigrants in the past, there is
a fairly good chance that neither of us would be writing English now.

Paul.
