How true. I know of one very dear friend who is in that trap now. He is
being paid 1/3 what I made at my last full time job. He is the only
Microsoft guy I have ever see that can say his skills are at the level of a
"CCIE" in that field. He's quite brilliant in any systems (linux, sun,
windows).
Amazing, huh?
"I feel your pain"
Don't worry brother, a better day waits ahead.

Hi,
Most companies today have realized that highly skilled ppl dont want to be
taken advantage of.. as a result they've trained their eyes on the
immigrants; anyone who comes to US for work, expects to apply for permanent
status within the 6yrs of his starting work... companies know that and tend
to exploit it. Once a company filed your paperwork, you cannot leave.. which
means the HR can afford not to give you that big fat raise you were hoping
and there's not a damn thing you can do about it...
The unfortunate part (as I have discovered off late) is that you need
permanent status here to earn good money or have good contacts to get a good
contract position who'd work with a consultant on visa.
So for fresh immigrants ( or even technical guys who come to work here..).
they need to get into a full time position b4 any company would foot that GC
bill... typical wait times are abt 2-3yrs.. or more..
Presto!! you got a guy who's gonna work for peanuts (pretty much) for at
least 3-5 years before you need to worry about raising his/her salary to
what it should be...
Just my thoughts..(and part experience!)
Piyoush.
