All,
I'm using a Q6600 and 4gb ram over Ubuntu 32bit,, and it's working extremely
Fine.
You don't need more then 3 gb actually.
Cheers,
Peter

Subject: Re: Server running Dynamips to build virtual rack
Based on some extensive testing I had the (dis)pleasure to undertake, during
the course of my CCIE lab prep, I'd spent close to a month trying to get
dynamips to work on multiple spec PCs. My deductions:
MINIMUM for a CCIE R&S rack (per IEWB topology) is a Dual Core 2.8Ghz w/ 3Gb
RAM.
I had cpl of 4-port NICs and found that the I/O for these took alot out of
the processor, result: a duo core just couldnt take all the load.
I recently bought a quad-core machine and decided to test if dynamips would
work after all...dynamips worked almost flawlessly.
My config: Intel Quad-core Q6600 2.4Ghz processor, 4Gb dual-channel (2gbx2)
corsair ram.
In my humble opinion, anything less than a quad-core with atleast 3gb (if
not 4gb) is asking for frustration... imagine just when ur done with that
grueling redistribution task and got perfect IGP reachability, and BAM!
dynamips crashes... it has happened to me, on more than one occasion.
Btw, make sure that the USB-to-LAN devices you purchase do not use the same
device drivers (That can cause only one to use and function at a time).
Dynamips ofcourse works and is a very good way to practice initially... just
have to watch the temper when it crashes in the middle of that difficult
task.. ;)
