For me, getting a CCIE is a bit like climbing a mountain "because it's
there." To continue the geological metaphor, doing a PhD would be a bit
like crawling out to the edge of a discipline, having a peek over the edge
and seeing if I can spot something that nobody else has ever seen.
I'd *really* like to experience both of these before I complete too many
more orbits of the Sun (nearly done 58, so far).
Meanwhile, back in the 'burbs, where's that pesky OSPF .11 subnet route gone
...
Regards,
Ian

But back in college, the CCIE would have WAY interfered with drinking time!

I resisted all day through 500+ long dreary pages of the 12.4 Doc CD to
chime in...
You are both forgetting ONE BIG thing that makes a degree (albeit more
valuable) MUCH EASIER than the CCIE for most...
MOST PEOPLE GET THEIR DEGREES DONE WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG!!!!!!!!!!!
Who cares how hard/long/difficult it is WHEN YOUR 22 FREAKIN YEARS OLD!!!
What 22 year old can't throw everything, time, student loans, behind getting
a masters/phd? All you need is a Death Valley temperature IQ and you're on
your way to Stanford, Stamford, CT and everything in between for a few more
years for that post-grad degree.
Most CCIE's start MUCH older... Do you know how many guys I know who would
LIKE to do the CCIE but "can't find the time" or "their wife won't let them
disappear from the family"?
This is the single reason the CCIE is much harder if you have a family...
I hear it every damn day... My wife won't let me, my wife won't let me...
Now what would really be HARD is getting into one of those schools and doing
your PHD while you have a wife and two small children!!!
Ever since women lost their skirts for pants, their motherly instincts to be
John D. Rockefeller (Aka Big business created/bankrolled the Womens lib
movement to get two working bodies into the job force for the price of one,
hence inflation)
Men just cant go out and bring home 2 chickens and a pot any more... we got
some diaper changing and laundry to do if we want to keep a
"relationship"...
It's a catch 22, I got to get my CCIE, my living expenses have gone up with
this family, oh, wait, the 5'4" Chairman of Standard Oil on the couch with
the 34 DD's wont let me...
LOL
