At the end of the day, you will get out of it what you put into it. What
that means to me is selecting advanced level classes and doing the 101
studying before you go. Try to sign up for some classes that are way
outside of what you do every day. Half of the challenge of network
design is even knowing about the new technologies, let alone knowing how
to configure them.
Take these as an example -
Good Class -
Advanced Optimized Edge Routing - excellent class, relatively new
technology (last year). I had read about it when I saw it in the class
schedule, but hadn't really talked about design scenarios, or really dug
to deep. This was a class of about 30 people, I would say about half had
their CCIE. The instructor was engaging and personable, I learned a lot
and spent about 15 minutes after the class with him on the whiteboard.
Horrible Class -
Some multicast course that I had to take as a filler class because I
registered late. 500 people, big dark room, stack of slides. I literally
walked out of this class 45 minutes into it. It was so big that the
speaker didn't have a chance to engage the audience, was talking about
the protocol in general and heavily focusing on implementation examples
(not config examples, implementation examples). Even without a rageing
hangover an afterparty the night before that class would have been a waste.
What I am doing this year -
Me and at least one of my Coworkers are taking the developers track. I
am a horrible developer, but the little I have learned about soap
interfaces and scripting IOS has helped me immensely. My hope is that
80% of the stuff is way over my head, but leaves me with a stack of
questions in my notebook.
That is really what Networkers is truly about. Its about connecting
with your pears and hopefully opening your eyes to something that you
have never seen before. Approach it that way, and you will get some good
value for your dollars. If you just go there and site in a class to
learn something "better" you will be wasting your money.
