Agreed that the example doesn't exactly match Tony, but it was just an
example being given in the original discussion. The answer given basically
was a quote from an earlier response to an earlier but similar question on
that one forum. So I've quoted somebody who quoted somebody! But on this
particular site, there's a means to mark which of the answers received was
accepted as the solution. The below quote of a quote, if I followed it all
correctly, was ultimately marked as the accepted solution, so I assume it
worked out for the OP with that 3550. Thus, I thought that might make it
worth throwing out for consideration. But I'm by no means standing behind
any of this as fact, as I know I've tried this approach on certain platforms
and just had zero luck with it no matter what I did that _seemed_ should
have worked just fine...

So although the answer given shows an example of a 3620, the original
question seems to have related to a 3550. And the example was marked as
accepted. May be worth a try if you haven't already finished with that
x-modem business...

I don't have any 3550s in my lab or I'd check this before posting. Can't
you do the 'tftpdnld' process on a 3550? I googled "tftpdnld 3550" and that
came back with a few hits, but they were mostly behind those stupid login
required "experts exchange" type of sites.
Anyway, *if* it's possible, that's generally speaking the easiest way to go
IMHO...

Be sure to set the Baud rate higher for the transfer and upload the smallest
image you can find just to get it operational.
Once operational, then you can do the normal archive download/sw /ov upgrade
to your desired version.
This two step process may be much faster in the long run.
