I'll just add my two cents to this...
Are you sure that it's possible to do a tftpdnld on a 3550? On most
catalyst switches (2950, 2960, etc), if the IOS is gone, the only way to
get another image onto the switch is by xmodem. Which takes forever,
given that you also cannot change the console speed. (I know this
because I teach classes at a Networking Academy, and almost every
semester there is a student that manages to type in "erase flash"
instead of "delete flash:vlan.dat", deleting the entire contents of
flash: in the process :) ).
Then again, what I just said here applies to 2950/2960 switches, and
might not apply to more advanced switches (like the 3550/3560). However,
this link seems to confirm what I just said (that xmodem is the only
option):
