Hello,
I use an HP 8430 Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz with 2Gb DRAM and I can easily get 10
routers running on WinXP Pro. I also like the 256Mb 1600X ATI graphics card
that allows gaming when I am not working... :)
I have used the Dell D820 as well with the Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz and 2Gb DRAM
with the same great Dynamips results, but the Intel shared memory video was
inadequate so I went with the HP.
I tested Dynamips on an HP DV-9000 (CTO) with Core 2 Duo 1.66 and 1Gb DRAM,
I noticed a little less performance and it was working hard to get 10
routers running. Could have been the DRAM sharing, but I really noticed the
performance increase on the 2.0.
My thoughts: If you can upgrade the processor a little you will be happier -
but only if you plan to run more than 8 routers. If you are going to run
Linux, then you should be just fine, the RAM will make up for the slower
processor. Remember that Dynamips will only use 3Gb DRAM in Windows!!
Also you can upgrade the processor in most laptops, look into that if you
are buying new. I was going to buy a 1.66 cheaper and then upgrade to a 2.2
- it was less cost over all than buying a NEW 2.2...
HTH!
