$ means end of string. So the first one means only 54, the second means starts with 54<space> and can have anything after it.

Hello,
I have some confusion between the below regular expressions:
show ip bgp reg ^54$
show ip bgp reg ^54_
Both of the above are giving me same routes, routes learned from AS54.
However, the first second command gives me the learned routes along with the
full AS path and the first one only shows the AS 54 in the AS path.
