Imagine a LAN (Shared Medium) Infrastructure two RIP enabled routers are connected. What will happen if a Router Goes down ? The point is , in this case You are not able to get inform about it.
If the router does not hear the update after the 30 seconds passed , It will enter the Invalid Timer which only keep on hearing for any update for related routes to update its routing table . After the 180 Seconds timer Finishes , It will enter the flush timer which the router will not remove the router from Routing table but it will mark it as Unreachable. To do so router will change the intended route's metrics to 4,294,967,295 , what is known as "Local Route Poisoning" .It will also send a triggered update. At this time if you execute "show ip route rip" it will display the targeted routes as " is possibly down". After the 60 seconds of Flush Timer is over , It will remove the route from Routing table and RIP Database.Which if you debug the RIP process, will be displayed as "Garbage Collection " State.
