Hi Scott,
The ATA is a difficult device to work with remotely since someone
might have converted it to a H323 or SIP image.
Without being local to go physically off-hook and push the button to
invoke IVR that allows you to control many of the functions such as
loading a new .zup image - it is difficult to work with.
Of course in any class we do - as well as in the real lab - you will
have access to a physical device - making things far easier.
You can find an ATA 186 on eBay for $20 all day long - I would highly
suggest just picking up one of these - and spending a little time
getting used to it (it REALLY doesn't take long at all to get used to).
In fact that is what most folks that come to our classes do as well -
since there are so many other things they can be picking the
instructors' brain about during class.
As to your 2nd question - Voice is a little different than RS or
Security in its preparation in that the basics (infrastructure: vlans,
trunking, dhcp, etc ...) do have to be performed every time. With a
router it is easy to load a base config in - but not as easy with
server components. We are working on streamlining this. The good news
is - that since in the Voice lab speed is a factor - that once you
have done the infrastructure tasks 16 times through (for all of the
mini-labs) that by the time you reach the multi-protocol labs - you
will be very fast at these tasks - and indeed you have to be in the
real lab. You time needs to be focused on getting Dial-Plan working
flawlessly - and if you aren't speedy at the infrastructure tasks -
you won't have time for completing everything.
HTH Some,
Mark Snow
