TCP handshake is build from very basic steps to establish and tear down a
connection as TCP is a connection oriented to establish a session you
(client) need to send a connection open that is the SYN then the other side
(server) need to acknowledge that he accept the connection by sending
SYN,ACK and the you (client) can send ACK packet to say I saw your ACK.
there are more flags for mid session and to finalize a session that are not
relevant to the SYN attack.
Now Syn attack is when a script (most of the cases) send a huge amount of
SYN packets the server replay with SYN,ACK and the script do not replay with
the final ACK what leave the session half open and using resources from the
server, today servers are very robust and there are also solutions to
prevent such attacks.
