I think the point is that money isn't everything. I know some folks at
Google, and they enjoy what they do. That is more important in the long-run
than making lots of money, but hating whatever you are doing.
Sometimes it may be hard to see that because everything flashes $$ signs and
people seem to flock to it. But keep in mind that even if you are paid
well, but not around/have time to enjoy any of it, what have you gained!
You're just miserable from your job.
Personally, I think that all the folks drive Jetta's because they live in CA
and have to find housing. Even if they made lots of money it still wouldn't
help that. :)
It's a little late to dream about becoming a millionaire on Google's stock,
or at least it will take a lot longer to make that happen. But you need to
enjoy whatever it is you are doing.
Besides, if you didn't like the VW you were driving, there's always the
Catapult contests that they have (I think in California) to see how far you
can launch a Beetle. :) I doubt it's a Google offering, but its still
gotta be lots of fun!

hehehe..very true. It all depends on what you want to do and what you are
prepared to do while doing it. Not all high paying gigs involve dark satanic
mills with evil bosses and people working under fear of the lash though.
Some have table tennis too! Culture doesn't necessarily mean you won't be
rewarded financially.

I pay a lot of attention to culture as I ended up at a Big Four consulting
firm due to not taking that into consideration. You spend too many hours
per week at a job to be miserable the entire time. I would rather have a
mohawk and conduct large-scale Nerf raids against the Linux team while
driving my 96 Jetta than have to stay clean cut and polished while driving a
new Lexus.
Besides, after this CCIE thingamajigger is done, even the low-end pay rate
isn't bad.
With a few exceptions, secrecy is deeply incompatible with democracy and
with science.
