RE: Router-id Harmful?

Hi Tarun,

I certainly agree with everyone's comments in favor of manually setting
RIDs. But I have also come to appreciate that there are some things worth
knowing when your hands are tied behind your back on this one. For example,
when restricted from manually setting the RID, you might create a loopback
and give it a certain address to meet the requirements of some random task.
But then what ripple-effect does that have in other areas of your config?
Now and after a reboot? Has it broken any of your previously configured
tasks? During practice labs, it might not be a half bad idea to
occasionally avoid the use of RIDs wherever possible in your configs
(virtual links would obviously be place to avoid this practice no matter
what) and figure out other ways to achieve the goals. Consistently
configuring RIDS 100% of the time during lab prep may leave you
vulnerable...

Regards,

Scott

Cielieska,
It is highly recommended to manual set the
router-id(unless told not to) and not change it. Router-id has a lot of
significance in OSPF right from DR/BDR election to setting up virtual links.
Any change in the router-id could seriously effect your ospf routes.

Tarun
