The storage CCIE is a weird cookie. There is definitely a push inside of
CISCO for datacenter in general, however Cisco itself was only recently
authorized to sell its own lower end devices (the 9124 and 9134 based on
the san on a chip architecture). That Leaves the 9200 and 9500 series
chassis to be sourced from OSM's such as EMC, HP, or HDS.
So, to end up seriously leveraging your storage CCIE you end up having
to get cross certified in two or three block device vendors products,
and managing that sales cycle in three channels.
Now, I use my storage CCIE as more of an ancillary function. My main
focus is around datacenter design, and it allows me to include the
storage / virtualization side more competently into my designs. This
goes well with my general opinion that fibre channel and other storage
technologies will eventually be considered and integrated as a unified
datacenter backplane. (DC 3.0 anyone)
As for you goal to have something that not many people have, the
storage CCIE is it. I have gotten the response of "I didn't know that
there were any storage IE's outside of Cisco" a couple of times. Combine
that with only nine storage CCIE's being added in the past three months,
and you come up with something that is very rare, and I believe building
in value as Cisco pushes DC 3.0 in the future.
