RE: Static M-cast and Auto-rp

Not labbed this up myself, but wouldn't it make sense that the highest IP
address only comes into play, once the RP assignment method has been chosen.
For example, only when auto-rp is chosen for RP assignment, do we then
choose the highest IP address. Similarly, if static rp is preffered
(override) then we don't even get to the point of choosing the highest IP
with auto-rp.

Heres an analogy to explain this......

With a NSSA, the ABR with the highest router id is chosen as the LSA7 to
LSA5 translator. If a NON-ABR router has the highest router id, it doesn't
come into play (because its not an ABR). Ok, bad example.... ;-)

Hope you get my drift...!!!!!

Subject: Static M-cast and Auto-rp

Hello,

My question is with regard to the order in which PIM routers choose there RP
assignment.

Auto-rp is preferred over static rp, unless you use the override feature.

But we also have the highest RP IP address wins ( which is what I think is
the preferred choice).

Which has precedence, highest IP address or auto-rp assignment over static
assignment?

I should lab it up and see, but I am unable to for the next few days.

I am wondering if this provides a solution to making a smaller IP address
the preferred RP, when you are restricted to using loopbacks given.

Thanks and regards
nic
