RE: dyanmips lab setup help needed: how to install 12 usb

Hi Kim,

I have increasingly been hearing of BGP being the devil wrt to Dynamips.
Although the initial response from the developers is that no single protocol
within the overall IOS could behave badly, I would personally recommend that
you experiment with different IOS and idlepc values (see the idlepc sticky
under the "General" forum for some ideas), as I have never had any troubles
with or without BGP running/redistributing/etc.

I run a 2 GHz Duo Core proc w/ 2GB RAM. My image is
C3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-17.image and I run idlepc 0x62378e9c. Fair
warning: although I have gotten many very positive responses on this,
someone I sent this to earlier this evening did not have any luck with it at
all (so far anyway).

Good luck.

Scott

Hi Scott,

What's your Mac Mini specs? I have AMD Athon X2 1.9GHz with 2GB of RAM
running Ubuntu. I am able to run full IE lab with 13 devices, but whenever
I turn on BGP, everyting just slows to halt. What image are you running and
how many RAM do you assign per device?

Thanks.

Kim

Hey DR,

Mac sux for everyday use IMHO. However, if you're going to dedicate a
machine to Dynamips, OS X or Linux simply can't be beat. Also, you can run
Dynamips on the Mini but Dynagen on your Windows box, which seriously
minimizes your direct interaction with OS X.

Jo,

I have been running the full IEWB topology on a Mini for quite some time
now. Running Advanced Enterprise code and with all of the routers fully
configured (IGPs, BGP, etc), my CPU utilization is between 20 and 30%. None
of the lab topologies I'm doing calls for 13 or 14 routers, but I have ran
in excess of 20 just to see what I could see. By the time you get in the
neighborhood of 25 routers, that Duo Core proc is going to be stressed.

The most important thing to bear in mind is that if you're going to go this
route, plan to set aside a good full week to learn the ropes of your new OS.

Seems some like to go with OS X or Linux and then immediately post on the
Hacki forum (or worse, here) asking for a good hand-holding. They usually
don't elicit too much of a response, because it's pretty clear when someone
isn't trying very hard to help themselves. Be willing to invest the time or
just chose to invest the cash in a hardware rack instead...

Regards,

Scott

Sheesh!

people must be working for Crapple on this board. Mac still sux just like it

always did. Jo, you can use any brand of PC. Get a quad core, more bang for
your buck.
