I am scheduled soon, and I look at it this way.

1. This is something I *need* to do to know that I can.
2. I like the idea of handing someone a business card in California, Japan,
Australia, Costa Rica... and getting instant respect.
3. If financial justification is required, just do the math.

10 attempts = $14,000 US. Add travel and hotel, etc, and bump that to $20,000
US.

There is an excellent chance you will make $20,000 more in the FIRST YEAR of
being a CCIE than you did before (assuming you're willing to jump jobs). Say
you get a 10k raise. So after about 2.5 years (taxes...) you make it all
back. Unless you plan on not re-certing this extra money will continue. The
math makes this sound like some too-good-to-be-true infomercial, until you
factor in the incredible difficulty.

Keep fighting the good fight. I work with a CCIE R&S who failed 5 times over
5 years, and he is a fantastic engineer.

With a few exceptions, secrecy is deeply incompatible with democracy and with
science.
