RE: Cat3560 8 port switch

Hey Greg,

It can be done, but takes some thought before starting each lab. I have
four of these tied to my Dynamips server. Of course, the full topology
calls for there to be nine ports dedicated to inter-switch connectivity, but
no single lab that I've done thus far calls for anywhere near that many. I
fully read the L2 tasks and determine which are critical in terms of port
count and which are not. For example, I recently did a lab where you were
supposed to influence spanning tree such that traffic flowed over one of
three inter-switch links normally, failed to a specific other port in the
event of a failure of the primary link, and then finally to the last. So
for this lab I ensured that I had all three connections. Other times the
task has you do two or three links but seems meant only to give you practice
in configuring trunking or EtherChannels or port aggregation protocols. If
I need to, I drop such tasks down to one or two links instead of two or
three (never to I drop to zero). I draw out each lab in PowerPoint and I
show which links are missing in my home lab topology and what re-cabling I
might have to do in order to put the lab together. Actually, since I've
done the footwork on the first handful of labs, it would be quite easy for
someone following in my footsteps (I'll gladly send the drawings to anyone
interested). Admittedly, I have a ways to go in Vol II, so I may be in for
some nasty surprises. But through Lab 4 anyway, it's not been so difficult
(the first was a hump to be gotten over, but now I understand it all a
little better and can reverse and re-engineer the L2 portion of a lab pretty
quickly).

Regards,

Scott

Wouldn't it be hard to run the full IE topology? The interswitch links
eat up 9 ports on each switch, not including the router connections!
