Hi Bill,
I've employed the same tax accountant for 10 years. I actually believe he
is too scrupulous sometimes. Anything I want to claim, he verifies and
checks. But, even he has never had an issue with me writing off my
hardware. Same goes for any training material (workbooks), books, classes,
written test, cables, memory, IE lab fee, hotel/gas/toll for the trip to the
lab, etc... He was also comfortable with me writing off a small % of my
electric bill. I wrote them off for years, w/out any issue.
And, just to CYA, as the others have mentioned - consult a tax professional.
On a side note - I made my final credit card payment for my lab this
morning!! Finally have the test paid off!! I probably had well over $40K
in total expenses over the years for my digits (pre-Dynamips).
