Remember that OSPF is a link-state routing protocol, and within an area the
OSPF database must be consistent.
If you were to split OSPF into multiple areas and make R1 an ABR with R2 and
R4 in area 2 you could use a filter list on R1 to make area 2 not know of
those routes.
