when they tell you not to use network statement they do not mean to
announcing the interface, they refer to changing the Network Type that from
the default interface

on Serial FR it is NON-Broadcast
on Serial HDLC or PPP it is POINT to POINT
on Shared Broadcast like Ethernet it is Broadcast
on Loopback it is Loopback

with ip ospf network <network-type> you can simply modify the network type
and by doing so you can modify the behavior of OSPF.
