Don't worry, worked it out.

You need to use the interfaces on R5 and SW1 which are in their
respective OSPF area 0's.

Otherwise although the tunnel will come up and they will become
neighbours their databases will be incorrect.

Subject: ip unnumbered

Dear SG,

Does anyone know of any best practices when using IP unnumbered?

For instance I have the following:

            Serail1/0---R5---Ethernet----SW1----Ethernet

Now serial 1/0 on R5 is OSPF area 0

Between R5 and SW1 is area 57 which is a stub.

The other Ethernet on SW1 is area 0

I need to create a tunnel between R5 and SW1 and I need to use IP
unnumbered on the tunnel interface.

Are there certain criteria for which address you use for the IP
unnumbered?

Thanks as always,

Simon.
