NAT question

why do I get no translation when I use the command

ip nat inside source network 10.0.0.0 44.44.44.0 255.255.255.0

I get translation with

ip nat inside source network 10.0.0.0 44.44.44.0 /24

My understanding was that mask(255.255.255.0)=prefix(/24)

Any help clearing this up would be greatly appreciated
