Hi there,

While I may sound a bit insane, i would recommend you to start your learning
with a purely virtual voice lab :) You can easily simulate a *lot* of tasks
(maybe
even 70% of voice lab content) just by using Vmware and Dynamips, along with
VTGO softphones. You know: CCM, Unity, IPCC, SRST, CME, H.323 Gatekeeprs,
SIP GW, WAN QoS - you can practice all those with just a couple of (powerful
enough) PCs...

Actually, all this "junk ;)" (6503, 6608, VG248, ATA186, 3550/3560, PVDMs)
lie on
the very border of voice lab: that is, you use them as supplementary
resources
to connect the endpoints and enable some additional services... PSTN
signaling
and PSTN gateways are not that hard as they may seem to look..

The biggest challenge of the voice lab is the part where you set up call
routing,
applications and various crazy services :)

So I would personally recommend you to start learning all those applications
and
services stuff, which are pretty "agnostic" with respect to "border
signaling and peripherals"...

Then again, it's just my way get the things done with voice.. ;) We'll see
how it works :)

PS
Oh yeah, I think you may bet, that our forthcoming workbook would be pretty
easy to adapt to the virtual topology.. Just strip out all the tasks
pertaining to "border things" and there you are..;)
