Well, I do admit I take a medicine chest of nutritional supplements each
day, including 100mg Ginko Biloba. There are other "brain" supplements but
I get most of those through my other pills to get most of what's believed to
help the mental side of health. I don't know if the GB has helped my memory
but I've never had a problem remembering technical details. I do think it's
helped me focus and stay sharp. Wish I could remember what I had for lunch
yesterday.

Other than that I take a rather well-rounded list of vitamins and minerals
as well as antioxidants, herbs, immunity boosters and stuff for my knees. I
also started to drink a lot more water than I used to and avoid most of the
sugar I used to love to eat. Hitting 40 sure changed things for me. ;-)

Gary,

I was just thinking about starting such a thread while at the gym today. My
parents fed me a diet consisting exclusively of lead-based paint as a child
(I'm told that "fuchsia" was my all-time favorite). In other words, memory
is the issue for me (while weight never really has been). I have found that
staying fit while studying is critical for several reasons:

1. The oxygen coursing through the brain can't hurt 2. It's excellent
meditation to do a good hard cardio routine 3. It helps me to sleep deeper,
which I understand to be important for the formation of lasting memories 4.
It keeps my overall energy level up 5. It prevents my rotting away (I can
sit down here playing with this lab for easily 18 hours straight) 6. It
gives me an excuse to go sit in the sauna/hot tub for a while after my
workout, which is therapeutic on several mental levels.

I also have been experimenting with some supplements. Most have been a
total waste of money, but one I picked up from the Vitamin Shoppe seems to
have a noticeable impact (it's called Ginkgo Neuro-Mind). I'm wide open to
any suggestions other list members may have where this is concerned.

I did start to let myself go while studying for the written and it had a
noticeable impact on every facet of life within just a few weeks. I vowed
to get back in the gym and stay there throughout lab prep. For the most
part, I've stayed committed. I did pull a few all-nighters while bringing
this home lab together and thus missed a few gym trips. But overall, I've
been staying the course and I honestly don't see how I could be successful
in my pursuit of the number if I let my physical condition deteriorate. For
me anyway, good body = passable mind...bad body = no chance.

Regards,

Scott

Latest news on CBS and health trends is not good..

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/01/31/health/main326811.shtml

'Just as the holidays have arrived, a federal survey says the country's
weight problem is worse than ever with more than 60 percent of Americans
overweight.

The Centers For Disease Control is sounding an alarm. It says Americans are
now fatter than they have ever been, the heaviest since the government
starting keeping records. Despite billions of dollars spent on diet aides,
America's waistline keeps growing.'

I just wonder how much time any of you take out to keep in shape? My new
born boy is keeping me real busy at home, add that to working fulltime and
studying for the CCIE and Im pretty pressed for the usual gym visits or
lengths in the swimming pool.
