SIP-PSTN gateway - do we still need DSP ?

Hi guys,

Just wondering if someone can point me in right direction.

I have the following scenario in mind:

{PSTN-AT&T}----------|PSTN-GW|-------IP----------|SIP-Softswitch|------------VoIP
phones
                                    SIP
|------------------------Voip phones

Now my question is re PSTN-gateway.

If I use Cisco AS5400XM router with E1 cards (DS0) , do I need DSP's
?????????????

1. Why would I use DSP? what are the benifit?
2. Can anyone advise me the correct card module I should be using for this
purpose?
3. Any configuration example? or pointer to website which mentions
SIP-PSTN-gateway to SIP-softswitch configuration.

All I can see online is about Call manager and PWG. PWG doesn't have support
for SIP.
