Hey Thomas,
I would think the entries get flushed out of the arp cache only when
the arp timer expires.
I know that gratutious arp is sent out by a station (upon a reboot i
think) when the mac address of a host changes (changing the network
card, changing the mac address, etc) so that other devices can update
their arp entries.
