To get well with multicast, focus primarily on those CORE topics:

1) Internet Standard Multicast (ISM): PIM DM and PIM SM. Master your
undestanding of PIM SM, Shared Tree/SPT and RP assignment
techniques (BSR/AutoRP/Static/Filtering).

2) Multicast troubleshooting: RPF/Olist problems, static mroutes, PIM
NBMA mode, tunneling, assert procedure understanding

3) Endpoint signaling: IGMPv1/v2, timers tuning, stub multicast routing.

The non-CORE topics follow:

1) PIM SSM/Bidir. Those are suprisingly simple, once you get the concept
of PIM SM and ISM. Bidir is complex on it's DF election, but it'sautomatic
procedure anyway :) PIM SSM is much more strightforward than PIM SM
actually.

2) Multicast in switched ethernet networks (IGMP snooping, CGMP,
IGMP Profiles, MVR)

3) Multicast QoS: Multicast rate-limiting and generic QoS

ESOTERIC:

Converting broadcast to multicast, DVMRP, PGM, RGMP, unidirectional
interfaces. Those are probably only to be aware of, since they reside on the
far
edge of non-core area ;)

For SP track, add inter-AS multicast to CORE topics: PIM SM + MSDP + MP-BGP, and Multicast VPN (draft-rosen) Those are not hard really, once you get a good grasp of PIM SM. (Add those to non-Core for RS track).

Going on with SP, Multicast VPN is set up almost automatically for Intra-AS multicast (there are options for PIM Bidir/SSM for default/data MDTs here, along with MDT ext-community maybe).

Inter-AS mVPN could be a bit more complex to understand with MDT SAFI + PIM SSM with RPF proxy extension, but bascially they are implemented using good old PIM SM and basic Inter-AS multicast exchange (MSDP+MP-BGP)
