I wouldn't say that the pay in Canada is significantly lower. I know of
several freshly minted CCIEs with approx 5 years experience in the $110 -
$130 thousand range. More senior engineers can make more. As always it
depends on the city and demand.
Another thing to consider was that several years ago the Canadian dollar was
trading in the mid 60 cent range compared with the US dollar. This means
that if you were making $120k here it was roughly $80k US. However the
Canadian dollar is now at a thirty year high of .95 cents US and many
believe the two will be on par by year end. Translation you now can almost
directly compare Canadian and American pay (not considering taxes). As for
the taxes yes for the high earners Canadian taxes are higher (a rough
ballpark of %10 higher from what I have heard).
In addition to financial compensation another big consideration is demand.
Western Canada (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton) are doing well right now.
There is a high demand for mid to senior level technical talent.
I currently in Canada now but I am considering moving to California. Not for
the money but the weather, too many years of snow for me!
Edward.

pay in Canada is much lower than the US and the tax is signicantly
higher. If you are young and single, I would recommend working in the
US....

Ali,
The cost of living on the west coast can be high and the opportunities
low.
Calgary, Alberta has plenty of opportunity for networking, good pay and
a reasonable cost of living.
Here is an intercity comparison of taxes and household charges:

That would depend on which province you are at. While some places
would pay as low as 70CAD (which sucks big time!) some other provinces
would be paying much more than that. But form a couple of ppl i know, i
think you would be looking at from $70K ($ Canadian). Then again, it
also depends on the company as well.
