You can use Route-maps,Prefix-lists,and Distribute-list for
filtering BGP routes. They all have their Pluses and Minuses, Route-maps
come in handy if you are trying to modify any of the BGP attributes,
Prefix-Lists on the other side do an excellent job monitoring subnet mask
while filtering, Distribute-list is useful when you want to specify the
source networks to filter. There are cases where any one of the techniques
can be used to accomplish a certain task and there are cases where you would
have to pick one over the other to achieve the results. In case, you decide
to use multiple techniques for testing, Please keep the following order of
Preference in Mind.
For inbound updates the order of preference is:
1. route-map
2. filter-list
3. prefix-list, distribute-list
For outbound updates the order of preference is:
1. prefix-list, distribute-list
2. filter-list
3. route-map
