As you have learned by now in this thread, you can prepare however you like for the lab exam. Each person seems to take a somewhat unique approach to the massive undertaking that is preparation.

With that said, not only would I highly recommend the completion of the CCNP track to a candidate, I would also recommend the following courses outside of the CCNP track:

Quality of Service (QoS) - CCVP Track
Configuring BGP on Cisco Routers (BGP) - CCIP Track
Securing Cisco Network Devices (SND) - CCSP Track

This body of courses will build a strong foundation on which you can pile the advanced content not covered in the above scope.

As long as you understand the material on the Blueprint, it is not a
requirement to go through the courses, as these are resources to HELP you
get there. The CCIE exam is not easy and there are no shortcuts. I have
the CCNP certification and four failed attempt....and abandoned the pursuit
at least once. After washing off the blood and letting my wounds heal
(figuratively speaking), I am starting to rejoin the journey (and it is a
journey). Study hard, do the labs, learn, use the resources, learn more,
etc. No shortcuts to being a CCIE.
