You will be far better off not assuming you can or can't do anything before
you actually get to the lab and read over the instructions/task
restrictions.
As long as you understand what happens when you don't hard code the RIDs
versus what happens when you do you are all set. I would highly recommend
when doing a couple practice labs don't hard code them and see if you catch
any potential problems or actually run into problems.
