Depends on the version. In VTP version 1, domain names must match. Here
is the quote from the doc cd:

Version-Dependent Transparent ModeIn VTP Version 1, a VTP transparent
switch inspects VTP messages for the domain name and version and
forwards a message only if the version and domain name match. Because
VTP Version 2 supports only one domain, it forwards VTP messages in
transparent mode without inspecting the version and domain name.

NOTE that the default version is version 1! When you do show vtp status
the "VTP Version: 2" means it is CAPABLE of doing version 2. Note
further down the "V2 Mode" is disabled. Indicating (in a backasswards
way) the switch is running V1!

CAT3#sh vtp status
VTP Version : 2
Configuration Revision : 6
Maximum VLANs supported locally : 1005
Number of existing VLANs : 7
VTP Operating Mode : Server
VTP Domain Name :
VTP Pruning Mode : Disabled
VTP V2 Mode : Disabled

Does that help?
