Yes, if you have a very large image file it takes hours together to upload
the image through Xmodem. My work around is, load the smallest
possible/available image via Xmodem, this might take much less time compared
to the latest image. Once you got the device working, upload the
latest/required image via TFTP. This technique saved a lot of time on
uploading 12.4 image to my 3640 routers.

As far as I know, Xmodem is your only option, not too slow if you crank up
the speed of your serial port.
