Hi John,
First in cat OS auxiliary VLAN terminology is used. You can refer this link
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5528/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00807742ae.html#wp1030825
you can see "Voice VLAN is referred to as an auxiliary VLAN in some Catalyst 6500 family switch documentation."
You can configure swich port mode access with one access vlan 10. and when you configure switchport voice vlan 20, you can call this vlan 20 as auxiliary vlan. And even though the switch is access port, when you enable voice port, it runs dot1q encapsulation.
You can also configure a port as a trunk port. And on top of it you can add switchport voice vlan 20. It will work... But if you see in the Cisco configuration guide
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5528/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00807742ae.html#wp1030825
There is a note "Voice VLAN is only supported on access ports and not on trunk ports, even though the configuration is allowed."
But It works on the trunk port also..
Thanks,
Anees.

for some reason, it took me 2 weeks to go through the voice vlan confusion.
but it took me 5 seconds to understand auxiliary vlan. access port is meant to carry only 1 vlan. the extra allowed vlan is auxiliary.
