Hi,
You can configure auto-rp in both PIM mode SD or S
The way autoRP is configured does not depend where you configure or not
the MA off course you must be aware of RPF but this is not the case
right now, because it is just the way on how, RP-Discoveries multicast
are send Cisco Discovery (224.0.1.40) group by MA, and RP-Announcements
multicast to the
Cisco Announce (224.0.1.39) group by cRPS
Using sparse mode you do not have the dense capabilities of the groups
above to learn the MA Information and the RP information so using ip pim
autorp-listener could help you here!
Williamson is a great book to start understanding multicast
Espero sirva de Ayuda
Victor.-

It depends of where you need to configure the mapping agent.
If your mapping agent is configured on the RP you can use sparse-mode.
In
case you need to configure the mapping agent in another router you need
to
configure sparse-dense mode because you will need to use the 224.0.0.40.
(or
.39, I`m not sure now...)
I`m not able to explain deeper than this now...
Please someone confirm for me... :-)
