The VPN labels are always sent with the VPNv4 address family. Without the VPNv4 label you could not build your VPN label inside your transport label. The "send-label" option is used with the IPv4 unicast address family because you are building a transport label that normally comes from your IGP built LDP labels. When traffic transits the network it would look like:
-------------------------------------------------
| IPv4 BGP label | VPNv4 BGP label | IPv4 payload |
-------------------------------------------------
In other words the BGP send-label replaces the need for LDP, TDP, or RSVP built labels. It does not however replace the need for VPNv4.

Subject: RE: Intra-AS mpls vpn "send-label"
Hi Brian,
Thank you for your reply.
So good configururation behaviour should be that for instance with intra-as-mpls vpn .. you only send-labels for the vpnv4 prefixes and not for the ebgp prefixes between the as-es... But why can't I set the send-label command to the vpnv4 addressfamily neighbors but only to ipv4 unicast address family.. I'm missing something, hopefully you can help me.
Regards
