I use SSH as well (Smith's 2nd option). Here is how it works -

Another way is to setup your terminal server with NATing from port
443/80 to 22 (SSH).
If you want, I can post a sample router configs for this.
SSH is very secure to access your home LAN devices from out side. Also
it is easier to find free software to setup.
